SOUTHERN PALMS RESORT, MOMBASA

SOUTHERN PALMS BEACH RESORT, MOMBASA

By Abdul Aziz

The Southern Palms Beach Resort is exactly as its name implies: It’s set on the South Coast of Mombasa, and it’s a veritable paradise set within thirteen acres of palm trees, bougainvillea and many other interesting species of flora! This ocean front property is set before one of the best beaches in the world: DianiBeach, and overlooks the delightfully warm green and turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.

Compared to the North Coast Hotels which are more popular because of their vicinity to the city, the Southern Palm is a heaven where the key focus is on privacy, peace and serenity away from the crowds. Arrival at Southern Palms is preceded by a short drive from the Moi International Airport to Likoni, whereby a ferry boat awaits to take you to the other side!

Accommodation at this four star hotel is quite reasonable, considering the fact that it gives you the ultimate Kenyan hospitality, amazing facilities and access to one of the cleanest beaches in Africa. This hotel has 148 rooms of which 36 overlook the sea and have to be asked for in advance. The rest offer views of the amazing tropical gardens where the beguiling scent of flowers is ever present.

Families with children are accommodated on the ground floor for safety reasons. Each guest room is en suite and has amenities such as air conditioning, beautiful four poster beds carved in the traditional Swahili way, a mini bar, direct dial telephones, television and video and a balcony with easy chairs for you to relax in and sunbathe in private. For your security, the wardrobes are fitted with special combination locks so that your personal belongings are always safe!

Dining at the Coast is always a flavorful experience, and this is more so with the Southern Palms Beach Resort which gives you a taste of exotic cuisines at its Main Restaurant, Boriti Snack, Pizza and Bar Restaurant and the ever-popular Nyama Choma Restaurant. You just can’t afford to give the local Nyama Choma a miss! Guests are entertained during and after dinner with a combination of African traditional song and dance, local folklore, African bands and acrobatics.

As for those who love water sports, the Southern Palms offers deep sea diving, fishing, snorkeling off the shores, wind surfing and so on. And if you’re not in the mood to face the waves, why not use the two swimming pools?

The Southern Palms Beach Hotel is truly an exercise in peace, tranquility and fun. So why not take this chance to forget the world, have some fun and get a tan?

7 Acre Beach Plot Mtwapa
Beautiful Seven Acre Beach Plot At Mtwapa.
This plot is located at Mtwapa. It is a seven acre plot, with almost 6 acres undeveloped. The one acre that has been built upon includes two sea facing houses with a swimming pool, store, car parks and private access to the beach.
This plot is ideal for constructing Villas, since the access to the beach already exists the only thing remaining is the construction of the Villas. A good example of such a project is the Wonder Paradise Beach Resort located at South Coast. The development could consist of a stretch of several Villas facing the swimming pool with each Villa having access to the beach. The houses that already exist could be brought down and a lounge area could be put up instead.
The owner is asking for 25M per acre but he is very keen for a quick sale it so there is lots of room for negotiation, which could bring the price down significantly.
Mtwapa is being developed at an alarming rate. This place is in huge demand hence a very good investment, prices for a 50 x 80 plot at the moment are going for 2.5M.

The "InshaAllah..." Mindset Strikes Again
After having asked my husband to clean the yard "this week" 9 weeks running now, so that HIS guests can have a safe (and clean) place for their children to play, I do not feel bad at all posting this. Anyone who has been a English teacher in USA, or anywhere in Asia, and in the Middleeast, will relate. So will loads of others, so even though MOP DOES NOT fit the "inshaAllah" stereotype, I am mad about the "inshaAllah I will clean the yard" soooooo.... here goes.JAPANESE/CHINESE/KOREAN ATTITUDE FOR WORK:"If one can do it, I can do it. If no one can do it, I must do it."MIDDLE EASTERN ATTITUDE FOR WORK:"Wallahi, if one can do it, let him do it. If no one can do it, ya habibi how can I do it?"

"Caring What People Think Too Much in Oman"
Caring what people think too much, is a village's theme in Oman. Which is why my husband, who loves his village more passionatley than many who actually reside there, does not want to live there at this point in his life. Same goes for his cousin, who has all her family and friends there, but wishes often, that she could escape to a nice cosy apartment in Muscat.Example: my sister in law recently purchased the abaya pictured below.

Business booming in the Mara as tourists flock to watch wildebeests

Business booming in the Mara as tourists flock to watch wildebeests

The wildebeest migration, one of the last remaining great mammal migrations in the world, has started in earnest with visitors from all over the world jamming Maasai Mara game reserve.

A Nation team that toured the resort at the weekend was met by safari enthusiasts from within and outside the country who scrambled to catch a glimpse of what is one of the world’s truly spectacular scenes.

The migration, determined mostly by climatic patterns, has coincided with the sprouting of long lush green and golden grass in the savannah, the result of rains that have recently fallen over the area.

Kenya Tourism Board managing director Muriithi Ndegwa says the rise in the water levels in the Mara was as a result of the conservation of the Mau Forest which is the catchment of the river.

An estimated 1.5 million wildebeests cross the Mara River in the months of June to August to graze and to mate, before returning to the Serengeti in the late October to November. As many as 500,000 zebra precede them.

“KTB is keen on contributing towards the survival of this crucial resource that has boosted our performance in the tourism sector with Maasai Mara being among our hot spots in terms of tourist attractions,” said Mr Ndegwa.

He called on the tourists to discover Kenya’s diversity by visiting other attractions within the country after witnessing the wildebeest migration.

“KTB has put in place diversification strategy to sell other niche products that include eco-tourism, sports, culture and conference tourism,” added Mr Ndegwa.

Sometimes the chosen crossing place is shallow, which allows the majority of the herds to cross safely. But often the river is deep and fast flowing, with steep banks on either side.

Many of the weaker animals are not able to cope with the strong river currents or the buffeting from other wildebeest as they swim.

Hundreds of animals can die during the crossing, littering the waters edge with corpses. These will be devoured by the numerous, hungry, and eagerly waiting crocodiles.

Mr Brian Heath, the director of the Mara Conservancy which manages the Mara Triangle on behalf of the Trans Mara county council says the migration started a few weeks late and had led to the swelling of waters in the Mara, a situation which he said was endangering the animals.

“It is an ironic situation. When the water levels are high, the plunge is more spectacular; but the animals die in their thousands.

“However, when the water levels are low, more animals survive, but visitors are disappointed that the crossing is not as interesting as it should be,” said Mr Heath.

Conservationists have however warned that if the environment around the Mara was not conserved, then the destination’s most important attraction will soon be history.

Dr Joseph Ogutu, a senior researcher at the University of Bohenheim, Germany, recently told the BBC that the annual wildebeest migration, for which the Mara is known, will soon be a thing of the past as it now involved “64 per cent fewer animals than in the early 1980s”.

Brisk business as tourists flock to lodges and camps

Tourist establishments in national parks and game reserves are packed with holidaymakers who have flocked to the country for wildlife safaris.
According to players in the tourism industry, investors in the sector are doing brisk business with lodges and camps in Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Samburu, Tsavo West and Tsavo East national parks bursting at the seams with guests.

A majority of the tourists are in the country to witness the spectacular migration of wildebeests from Serengeti plains in Tanzania to the Mara.

Ashnil Hotels marketing manager Paul Kurgat said their camps in Mara and Samburu are fully booked up to September. The camps have more than 100 beds.

Seven Wonders

Mr Kurgat said most of the tourists were from the US, the United Kingdom, Germany and France.

“Tourists from the US and Europe have flocked to the Mara attracted by the migration of wildebeests which is one of the new Seven Wonders of the world,” he said.

“Lodges and camps in Samburu and Tsavo are also packed as holidaymakers have visited to watch wildlife,” he added.

Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp in Naivasha

Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp in Naivasha

TPS Serena has announced a Sh4 billion plan to upgrade the Nairobi Serena hotel as competition intensifies in Kenya’s hospitality industry The revamp will see the hotel chain establish a separate wing adjacent to the Nairobi hotel that will have a 300-seat conference centre, a car park, 40 new rooms and refurbished public areas. The annex will be built on a piece of land that is currently used as a car park by hotel guests.

“If we do not reinvest in improving our properties, then they will become boring especially for repeat customers,” said the TPS Eastern Africa Group managing director, Mr Mahmud Janmohamed.” The expansion will start in December and take three years to complete.

Mr Janmohamed was speaking at the opening of the Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp in Naivasha, its 24th property in the six countries it operates in. TPS Serena’s hotels and lodges are located in Kenya, Rwanda, Zanzibar, Uganda, Tanzania and Mozambique.

The Sh360 million camp has 24 luxury tents and a furnished suite named Flamingo for travellers seeking privacy and comfort in a natural setting.

Located within a private ranch - the Soysambu Conservancy - 28 Kilometres from Nakuru town and a kilometre from an airstrip, the facility will host tourists visiting Lake Elmenteita. The Lake is the only breeding ground for the white Pelican in East Africa.

Lake Nakuru national park, the Kariandusi pre-historic site and the Kikopey hot springs are other tourist attractions within reach from the camp.

Unlike hotels and lodges that offer a mix of business and pleasure, luxury camps offer an exclusive experience in the wild. It is set on 25 acres within the 40,000 hectare ranch that is home to three species of giraffes. The location will help it tap into the shift in preferences by visitors towards environmental tourism.

The Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) is the principal shareholder in TPS Eastern Africa Ltd, which runs the Serena hotel chain.

His Highness Prince Amyn Aga Khan, chairman of the AKFED Executive Committee, called on the government to ensure that the relevant infrastructure is installed to support further investments in the country. “We in the Serena Group, are proud and grateful that we have been able to play a leading role in the growth and development of this country.

Prince Amyn said the main aim of investing in Elmentaita Serena Camp was to strengthen the hotel chain’s western Kenya Safari circuit and link it with the Masai Mara Serena Lodge.

Saudi Arabia, Kenya to boost cooperation in tourism sector - Arab News

Saudi Arabia, Kenya to boost cooperation in tourism sector

Plans are also afoot to open a full-fledged office of Kenya’s tourism department in Saudi Arabia, which will be entrusted with the task to generate awareness about Kenyan tourism products and to increase Riyadh-Nairobi tourism traffic,” said Kenyan Minister of Tourism Najib M. Balala, here Tuesday evening.

He met Prince Sultan bin Salman, chief of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) and Fahd A. Balghunaim, Minister of Agriculture during his stay. Mohamud Ali Saleh, Kenyan ambassador, was also present during the meetings.

Balala, who held wide-ranging talks with top officials during his stay in Riyadh, said that the two sides were keen to share experiences in this sector. The Kenyan minister was speaking to Arab News in a special interview at Riyadh’s Al-Faisaliah Hotel.

The Kenyan minister pointed out that he had discussed with the head of SCTA Prince Sultan safari tourism and upgrading Saudi skills in the tourism sector. He said he would share with the SCTA the legal framework that governs the tourism sector of Kenya.

Referring to the broad areas of cooperation in tourism sector, he said, "Prince Sultan had done a great job especially in terms of promoting community-based tourism in the Kingdom …… Kenya can also learn from Saudi experience."

Also, Kenya has a lot to offer to the Saudi market in terms of training of personnel working in tourism sector, exchange of technical expertise and tourism programs, the Kenyan minister said.

The Kenyan government recently passed a tourism bill that harmonizes all existing laws of the tourism sector. To this end, he noted that the tourism sector of Kenya has been growing progressively. The country recorded the highest number of tourists’ arrivals ever at more than one million tourists in 2010. This was a 15 percent increase over 2009, said the minister, adding that this figure excludes travelers that entered the country by land, which could add up to another approximately 700,000 tourists.

Enjoy a Dhow Trip

Things to Do in Kenya

As you visit Kenya, there a few experiences you should not leave without. Kenya has been known worldwide for its glamorous culture and rich heritage, most of which place Kenya as one of the top tourist destinations in the world. Here are the top five recommendations of travelers and locals alike for tourists like you to make the most out of your experience:

1. Enjoy a Dhow Trip
Dhows were traditionally used by Arab traders who roamed from one port to another. Centuries after their first use, dhows are still readily and widely used in Kenya both as livelihood necessities and tourist attractions. Should you choose to avail of a dhow trip, you have the option of having a bigger dhow which is usually run by motors, or a smaller dhow which utilizes the wind for navigation. Whichever you opt for, the experience would definitely be exhilarating.

2. Take a Balloon Trip
A balloon trip over Kenya can be very memorable, most especially if you are in the company of the people you love. The trip would take you over acres of land, wherein you would be able to spot a variety of animals as you enjoy a better perspective of Kenya. It will often commence at early dawn, last for several hours, and end with a delicious breakfast served with a bottle of champagne.

3. Experience a Safari
If you are an animal lover or simply someone who appreciates the sight of animals, then an African Safari is the best experience for you. Once in a safari, you will be taken to various sights on your chosen reservation area. From such place, you will be able to witness how animals usually spend their days. In a safari, you might be able to see cheetahs, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and even hippos in action.

4. Visit a Traditional Village
A visit to a Traditionaltribal village would definitely let you experience the diverse kenyan culture at its finest. A visit such as this facilitates an interaction with the local people, and if you are lucky, they might even teach you some of the techniques of their crafts.

5. Head Out to the Beach
A visit to Kenya would not be complete if you fail to appreciate its clear and serene waters. Every visitor in Kenya must enjoy taking a dip into the Kenyan beach after a day’s worth of exploring the Kenyan land and air. After all, Kenya does boast of having one of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

Lamu wedding pics by the blodephotographer

Pictures of a recent wedding in kipugani Lamu.
Lamu is definitely the top wedding destination.thanks for showing the beauty of lamu and love with the pictures

kipungani is a secluded, remote area of lamu island located on the southwest side, and separated from the mainland by a peaceful, mangrove lined bay. the beach is an endless stretch of white sand, speckled with palm trees and strewn with delicate sand dollars, facing out onto the indian ocean. traversing the 15 miles from either of the two main settlements on the island, lamu town or shela village, takes approximately 3 hours on foot, 1.5 hours by dhow (sail boat) or 25 minutes by speedboat.

for lu + jason’s wedding, guests flew in from nairobi and landed on the manda airstrip, just across the channel from lamu island, and traveled by speedboat to kizingoni beach. kipungani is a very small village, and kizingoni beach is a collection of privately owned, stunning swahili houses, with a full staff to accomodate guests and arrange meals, activities and excursions, as well as plan events + weddings.

South Sudan backs independence - results

Newest african nation

Southern Sudan voted overwhelmingly for independence, election officials have confirmed.

They said nearly 99% of the voters in January's referendum were in favour of dividing Africa's biggest country.

Earlier, Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir again said he would accept the outcome of the vote.

The poll was agreed as part of a 2005 peace agreement ending more than two decades of civil war between the south and north Sudan.

Although the vote was peaceful, tension remains high in parts of the oil-rich border region.

At least 50 people were killed over the weekend in fighting between soldiers in south Sudan's Upper Nile state.

End of the road for Masai giraffe

Did KWS really shoot the giraffe?

A male Maasai giraffe with a broken right foreleg lies by the side of Nairobi-Magadi road, Friday January 28, 2011. ADAM WITHEY, a traveller who took the photographs, believes it was hit by a vehicle earlier that morning. He says the incident took place just before Ol Tepesi, about 2 or 3 kilometres from the National Museums of Kenya's Olorgesaille prehistoric site. The matter was reported to Kenya Wildlife Service, he adds, and to various other conservation groups. While returning to Magadi the following day he stopped at Ol Tepesi and was informed that the KWS had arrived later that day and the giraffe had been shot and dragged away.
