I know this blog is about Lamu.
I cant help writing about my other favourite destination,Marrakesh (marrakech).
We arrived early this morning from Luton aboard Ryanair.
We managed to get a good deal on Ryanair.
I avoided going to the toilet just in case i ahve to pay to use.

This is the first time staying outside the medina in a brand new hotel.
The hotel is in the hivernage area just near sofitel.
First impressions.. it looks good.
Good check in service.

We paid 100 dirhams for the

Nairobi's Tamarind Restaurant: no bad aftertaste

Tamarind_decor_2I dined with the Kenyan Vice President today. Okay, so I'm lying. But we did eat at the same restaurant, Tamarind. He deserved it after all those hours of policy-making. (Isn't that what vice-presidents do?) I'm not sure what my excuse was for splurging at the Tamarind.

Hanging from the Tamarind's ceiling are more than two dozen different Moroccan pierced lanterns. Alright, so they are not really Moroccan; they just look like it; the pendant lanterns actually come from Mombasa, where a concentrated community of Muslims lives. Hmm, no wonder I felt so at home. But enough of the decor, what about the food? To start, diners are offered fish tartar in china spoons, fresh and delicious. But it was the $40 seafood platter that had me greedily gorging. The Tamarind is reputed to be one of Nairobi's best seafood restaurants, and the platter included a generous selection of steamed and broiled lobster, a deep fried lobster claw, raw and broiled oysters, lump crabmeat served in a seashell, and jumbo shrimp. Desert was a $9 poached pear in red wine sauce with an enormous lace cookie -- a personalized message delicately written in chocolate sauce on the plate's large white rim. After dinner, one of the single most fabulous drinks: served in wine glasses heated at the table, Kenyan Gold Liquor, topped by Kenyan coffee, and a dollop of fresh cream; for $7, it's pure yum. The service was friendly and impeccable.

Fatuma's Tower, Shela

Fatuma's Tower is a yoga and meditation retreat house set towards the back on Shella Village, some 3km north of Lamu Town on the island of Lamu.You don’t have to be in to yoga to stay here but you should be prepared for a simpler life, no alcohol, excellent communal meals, lots of rest and relaxation and time for thinking and reflecting. More like staying as a guest in someone’s house than a hotel. Fatuma’s Tower is well located, for the village, beach and Lamu Town. In the main house there are 6 rooms spread over the three floors of the main building and the house divides comfortably into two with separate kitchens. Ground floor is the Garden room with 2 double beds with en-suite bathroom and access directly out on the main garden area. Also on this floor are 2 smaller single rooms, which share a bathroom.First floor is the Balcony room which contains a double and a single bed together with an en-suite bathroom.Top floor is a self-contained apartment with private access and which can be booked separately from the remainder of the house. The apartment has two double rooms both of which are en-suite.All the rooms are furnished with simple and perhaps even a Spartan style, which seems to fit with the cleansing of the body, mind and spirit that this house exudes.



Kijani House, Lamu

Located in the island of Lamu, Kijani House offers a unique accommodation with its 2000 sq. meters of tropical garden, which leads directly to the sea, and two fresh water swimming pools. Each room has a bathroom and has its own balcony or veranda facing the garden and the sea. The rooms are spread throughout the garden into three small separate traditional Swahili buildings which formerly were private homes, made of coral walls, with boriti ceiling and makuti roofs the kitchen offers all types of fish, lobsters, crabs and prawns fresh from the sea, along with meat and fresh vegetables, together with African and Italian specialties.



Kipungani Sea Explorer

There are 14 spacious and secluded chalets constructed with local materials. Each room has a large king size bed and furniture all handmade. Activities include snorkeling, scuba diving, windsurfing, creek or deep-sea fishing, and bird walks.



Kisimani House - Lamu

Kisimani House is found in Shela Village on Lamu. It has been built like a fortress and has been beautifully furnished in Swahili style. There are four en-suite bedrooms, miscellaneous single beds, a large open-air living/dining terrace and private verandas on the ground floor. The two top floors have spectacular views of the ocean, the archipelago and of life in Shela village. In the endless white sandy beaches surrounding this hotel, the sea is clean and safe for swimming, goggling, skiing, windsurfing, sailing and fishing.



Kiwayu Safari Village

Kiwayu Village combines great natural beauty with exotic accommodations, marvelous food, and perfect peace and privacy. The village nestles under a tall stand of coconut palms on the White sand beach of a sparkling secluded bay. There are 22 cottages.Dinning at Kiwayu Safari village is a delight - giant crab claws, platters of lobster, perfect salads and amazing fish soup. Wind surfing, goggling, creek fishing, and deep-sea fishing is also available.
